Can't read the room (KY)
Overview
KY is short for kuuki ga yomenai ("can't read the air"), and refers to a person who fails to pick up on the mood of a situation or an unspoken understanding and says or does something out of place, or to that behavior itself. It became a buzzword around 2007 and has stayed in use since then.
In settings where reading the room is valued, KY is a label with a negative meaning. But reading the room is not always right in itself. It also has downsides, such as reading the room so much that you can't say what you think, or going along with the mood and making the wrong call.
KY in a question box
Some questions in a question box come across as KY. Someone sends "I sent you 10 questions! Answer them all!" right after the person answering posted "I'm not feeling well today." Someone sends a silly, completely unrelated question right after the person answering talked about a serious topic.
However, a question box is anonymous, and senders often don't know the latest situation of the person answering. At the moment they sent the question, they may not have seen the post. Some questions that look KY come from a matter of timing, not ill intent. Before deciding "this sender is KY," the person answering has room to think "maybe the timing was just bad."
Don't be too afraid of being KY
The fear of "I don't want people to think I'm KY" can raise the bar for sending questions. "If I send a question like this, they might think I can't read the room." Some people give up on asking because of this worry.
But a question box is not a place for reading the room. A question box is a place for sending questions. Even a question that is a little KY is better sent than not sent. You don't need to send the perfect question at the perfect time. Sending a question even if you can't quite read the room does more to liven up a question box than staying silent out of fear of being KY.
