Duality

Overview

Duality means a single being having two opposing qualities at the same time. Carl Jung taught that the human mind has a conscious personality (the persona) and an unconscious side (the shadow). We usually show our socially desirable side, but behind it lie repressed urges and emotions.

Duality in itself is neither good nor bad. What matters is whether you're aware of your duality. If you are, you can switch to the right side for each situation. If you aren't, you may act in contradictory ways without realizing it and confuse both yourself and those around you.

The duality that anonymity draws out

A question box is a device that brings duality to the surface. People who behave politely on real-name social media may become aggressive in anonymous questions, and people who usually post with confidence may open up about their anxiety and weakness in an anonymous question box. Anonymity takes off the social mask and can be what brings out the side you usually hide.

Duality appears in the person answering too. They act cheerful in front of their followers, but behind the scenes of their question box they are worn down by nasty questions. The answers they publish are polished, but the answers they deleted without publishing are full of emotional words. When this gap between the front and the back is large, the mental load on the person answering can grow heavier.

Integrating your duality

Psychological maturity is about integrating your duality, not denying it. Jung called this "individuation." It is the process of recognizing and accepting the contradictory sides within you and integrating them into one personality as a whole.

In running a question box, integration means narrowing the gap between your anonymous self and your real-name self. Little by little, you become able to say under your real name what you could only say anonymously. In your question box answers, you show a little of the weakness you don't show under your real name. A perfect match isn't necessary, but if the gap is too large, you may wear yourself out. A question box can work as a safe place to practice integrating your duality.
