Place to belong
Overview
A place to belong (ibasho in Japanese) means a place where you feel it's okay for you to be, or a relationship where you feel accepted. Not only physical spaces (your room, your classroom, your desk at work) but also psychological spaces (a friend group, an online community, a hobby meetup) can be places to belong.
The essence of a place to belong is a sense of safety and a sense of being accepted. When you're there, you don't have to pretend. There's no pressure of being judged. You can be yourself as you are. That feeling is what makes a place to belong what it is. On the other hand, no matter how much time you spend somewhere, if you don't feel safe there, it isn't a place to belong.
A question box as a place to belong
There are cases where a question box works as a place to belong. For people who have no friends at school, whose relationships with family aren't going well, or who feel there's no place for them in the real world, a question box can become one of the few places to have a conversation.
Whether a question box becomes a place to belong depends on the attitude of the person answering. Treat every question with respect, don't make fun of senders, and create an atmosphere where people feel safe asking. When these come together, a question box gradually turns from a simple Q&A tool into a place to belong that supports people emotionally. The person answering may not realize it, but their question box might be someone's only place to belong.
Having more than one place to belong
Having only one place to belong is risky. If you lose it, you may lose your emotional anchor. A state where a question box is your only place to belong is just a step away from depending on that question box. When a question box shuts down or the person answering takes a break, senders who lose their place to belong can be hurt by it.
The healthy thing is to have several places to belong. A question box can be one of them, but it shouldn't be the only one. Real-life friendships, hobby communities, family, other social media. If you have several places to belong, then even if one wobbles, the others are still there. A question box can be an entrance to a place to belong, and ideally things spread from there to other places too.
