Safe space

Overview

A safe space is a place where participants can express their thoughts and feelings without worry, free from criticism, mockery, or attack. It's a concept used in online communities too. In the context of a question box, it means an environment where senders can send questions without worry and the owner can answer without worry.

How to make your question box a safe space

To make your question box a safe space, the owner's attitude is the foundation. Don't make fun of questions, don't attack senders, and treat every question with respect. If this attitude stays consistent, followers tend to feel, "I can ask questions safely in this person's question box."

On the other hand, sharing even one answer that mocks a sender could break down the safe space. Turning a question into a joke, like "Look at this dumb question I got," can scare not only that sender but also other followers who are watching: "My question might get turned into a joke too."

Balancing safe spaces and free speech

Some people push back against safe spaces: "Isn't this overprotective?" "Shouldn't you accept critical opinions too?" This point has some truth to it. If you shut out all criticism, you risk ending up in an echo chamber (a closed space where only the same opinions bounce back).

In a question box, it's good to strike a balance by drawing the line at "welcome constructive criticism, remove aggressive abuse." "I think your answer is wrong about X" is constructive criticism and worth answering. "You're an idiot" is an attack, and it's fine to delete it. You'll want to apply this distinction consistently.

Safe spaces raise the quality of questions

When they feel safe, followers find it easier to ask what they really want to know instead of surface-level questions. Deep questions may come in too, such as requests for advice on worries, questions about careers, and requests for relationship advice.

Answers to these deep questions offer value not only to the sender but also to other followers who have the same worries.
