Getting a laugh (ukeru)
Overview
Ukeru is a casual expression meaning "funny" or "hilarious." It's used as a reaction to something funny, as in "maji ukeru" ("that's seriously hilarious") or "ukeru n dakedo" ("okay, that's hilarious").
On social media, ukeru is also used as a compliment. Saying a post or an answer "got a laugh" means it made the people who read it laugh or entertained them. How readers reacted also shows up in the number of likes and reposts.
The trap of going for laughs
Going for laughs in a question box isn't bad in itself. Funny answers lead to fun for your followers and a lively question box. However, going for laughs so hard that your answers lose their sincerity is one of the traps of going for laughs.
Answering every question with a boke (a deliberately silly remark), joking around even on serious questions, trying to get laughs with extreme remarks: these may bring short-term buzz, but they also leave a long-term impression that "this person won't answer me seriously." Senders with serious questions may drift away, and the questions may lean more and more toward joke questions. A question box that only goes for laughs is funny, but thin on substance.
Being funny and sincere at the same time
One kind of question box to aim for is one that's both funny and sincere. Go all out with silly replies to joke questions, and answer serious questions seriously. This contrast also gives a question box depth.
Being funny and being sincere don't contradict each other. You can mix humor into a sincere answer. Adding a line at the end of an answer on a serious topic that lightens the reader's mood is one idea. An answer that only gets a laugh and an answer that gets a laugh and makes you think stay in people's memory in different ways.
