Comic retort (tsukkomi)

Overview

Tsukkomi is one of the basic roles in Japanese comedy. It refers to the role that points out and reacts to the boke (the role that says silly things) with a line like "nande yanen" ("What are you talking about?" in Kansai dialect, the dialect of the Osaka area). It's the very structure of manzai (a Japanese comedy style performed by a duo), but people also widely talk about "making a comic retort" in everyday conversation.

A good comic retort has good timing, hits the mark, and is funny. Just pointing out a mistake isn't a comic retort. The skill of a comic retort is having humor in the way you point it out.

Comic retorts in a question box

Comic retorts come alive in question box answers when the question itself has something to retort to. "What's your favorite food? By the way, mine is concrete." Instead of seriously answering with your favorite food, you retort, "You eat concrete?" The ability to pick up on the odd part of a question and react to it is what makes an answer funny.

A comic retort is a team effort with the sender. The sender plays the boke, and the person answering makes the retort. When this back-and-forth clicks, the question box becomes like a manzai stage, and readers can enjoy the exchange too.

Getting the strength of a comic retort right

A comic retort needs the right strength. A retort that's too strong becomes an attack. "You don't even know that?" isn't pointing something out. It's dissing. A retort that's too weak isn't funny. "Oh, I see" makes nothing happen.

In a question box, aim for comic retorts with affection. Instead of making fun of the sender, bring out what's funny about the question. "Good question, but let me say just one thing." With a lead-in like this, a comic retort comes across more easily as a sign of affection rather than an attack.
