Ratio
Overview
A ratio (when the replies to a post outnumber its likes) refers to a situation where negative reactions to a social media post outnumber positive ones. On X, a post whose replies outnumber its likes or reposts is described as "getting ratioed." A normal post usually has the most likes, then reposts, then replies, but when a ratio happens, critical replies flood in and this order is flipped.
When your question box answer gets ratioed
When you share a question box Q&A on social media, a ratio can happen if your answer stirs up controversy. Careless answers on socially sensitive topics, answers that are taken as prejudice against a particular group, and answers that contain factual errors are especially likely to get ratioed.
A ratio can also be an early warning sign of a backlash. If you notice that a post has more replies than likes, check what the replies say, and if the criticism is fair, making a correction or apologizing early may keep it from growing into a backlash.
What to do when you get ratioed
Opinions differ on whether to delete a post that got ratioed. If you delete it, you may be criticized for "deleting an inconvenient post," while if you leave it up, the criticism keeps piling up. If you are clearly in the wrong, the sincere response is to add a correcting comment and leave the original post up.
What you want to avoid is pushing back against each critical reply one by one. Each time you push back, a new argument starts, the post gets more exposure, and it's easy to fall into a vicious cycle that draws in even more criticism. When a ratio happens, the realistic approach is to make only the corrections you need and then wait for time to settle things.
Don't fear ratios too much
If you fear ratios so much that you only give harmless answers, your question box loses its appeal. What followers want from a question box is the owner's frank opinions and honest thoughts, not safe answers that no one could criticize.
What matters is balancing two attitudes: "I may be criticized, but I'll answer sincerely with my own view" and "If I'm criticized, I'll take it seriously." No answer will please everyone. Have your own opinion, express it with care, and show respect for different opinions too. If you're consistent in this attitude, even if you get ratioed, it can still earn your followers' trust in the long run.
