Host (nushi)
Overview
Nushi ("master" or "host") is slang for the person who runs a stream, channel, or community. It's used in ways like namanushi (the host of a live stream) on Niconico (a Japanese video site), and it's also used for the people who run things on YouTube, question boxes, Discord servers, and more.
Calling someone nushi mixes respect and friendliness. It sounds softer than "admin" or "operator" and closer than "X-san" (a polite way to address someone by name). It's used as a way to refer to the person at the center of a community without sounding stiff.
The nushi of a question box
The person answering in a question box is the nushi of that question box. Which questions to answer, what tone to answer in, what kind of mood the question box should have: the nushi is the one who decides these things. The personality of a question box reflects the personality of its nushi.
Being aware that you're the nushi helps you run your question box better. Thinking "I'm the host of this space" leads to a sense of responsibility for the mood of your question box. You deal with trolls when they show up, answer good questions carefully, and make the community's rules clear.
What makes a good nushi
A good question box nushi has these qualities: being consistent, respecting senders, and knowing your own limits.
Being consistent means not changing your attitude depending on your mood. If you were polite yesterday but careless today, some senders will feel uneasy. Respecting senders means treating every question with at least a basic level of respect. Knowing your limits means resting when you're tired and honestly turning down questions you can't answer. You don't have to be a perfect nushi. Being a sincere nushi is enough.
