Can I take this? (moratte ii?)
Overview
Moratte ii? (Can I take this?) is an expression for asking permission in advance when you want to screenshot someone else's post or question box answer on social media to save it or share it on your own account. People use it like "Can I take a screenshot?" or "Can I share this answer?"
Question box answers can contain the personal thoughts and experiences of the person answering, and some people answering feel uncomfortable with their answers being spread through screenshots taken without permission.
Question box answers and screenshot culture
Besides the person answering sharing their own question box answers on social media, there are also cases where followers take screenshots of an answer and share them on their own accounts. Some shares are positive ("This answer is so good!"), and some are critical ("Isn't this answer kind of off?").
For the person answering, having their answer screenshotted and spread without asking is sometimes welcome and sometimes a problem. Some people answering don't mind if it's shared with its full context, but it's a problem when a clip twists what they meant. Asking "Can I take this?" also shows consideration for the person answering.
Asking is good manners, not a requirement
Asking "Can I take this?" isn't required, but it's good manners. Asking as a matter of manners helps keep the trust between you and the other person.
If you answer questions in a question box, one option is to make your stance on screenshots and sharing clear in advance. "Feel free to screenshot or share my answers." "If you share, please give me a heads-up first." Either is fine, but stating it clearly makes it less likely that your followers will have to wonder.
