Laid-back (mattari)

Overview

Mattari is a Japanese word for a relaxed, easygoing state, a mood where you're not in a hurry. As an expression of taste, it's used to mean "rich and mellow."

On social media, it refers to a style of keeping things going at your own pace without worrying about how often or how fast, as in "laid-back updates" or "running your account the laid-back way." It's the opposite of the gachi-zei (the hardcore crowd) who post every day.

Try a laid-back question box

Trying to answer every question every day tends to wear you out. Answer 2-3 times a week, whenever you feel like it. Don't worry about days when no questions come in. A pace like this is also one trick to keeping a question box fun.

The laid-back approach has the benefit of keeping up the quality of your answers. With the laid-back approach, you answer the questions you want to answer, when you want to, so it's easier to put real feeling into each one.

Laid-back isn't lazy

Some people feel like the laid-back approach is "slacking off." Other people answer every day, and you only answer twice a week. It's understandable to feel pressure when you compare yourself, but a question box isn't a competition.

It's also important to find a pace you can sustain. Answering twice a week for a year gives you more answers in total than answering every day and burning out in a month.
