Creepy question (kimoi)

Overview

A creepy question (kimoi) is an umbrella term for questions that make the person who receives them feel "this is gross." Specifically, it covers questions with sexual undertones, questions that keep asking about physical features, questions that dig for personal information like a stalker, and questions that assume an overly intimate relationship.

What feels "creepy" differs from person to person. A question that means nothing to one person becomes a creepy question to another. But the questions people find uncomfortable show common patterns.

How to handle creepy questions

When a creepy question arrives, one simple way to handle it is to delete it right away. If reading it makes you uncomfortable, you don't need to think about it any further. You have no obligation to answer, and no obligation to analyze "why it's creepy" either.

What you want to avoid is taking a screenshot of a creepy question and putting it on display. Posting "I got this creepy question" may win you sympathy from followers for a while, but it can make the mood of the whole question box worse. Some senders may hold back, thinking "my question might get put on display too."

How not to send creepy questions

Before you send a question, ask yourself, "Could I ask this face to face?" Whether you could ask it to someone's face is a good guide before you send it through a question box. Being anonymous doesn't mean you can ask anything. Even when you're anonymous, there is a real human being on the other side of the screen.

One thing to watch out for is cases where something you meant as "a light joke" becomes "a creepy question" to the other person. Sexual jokes, comments about someone's looks, and prying into their love life land differently for the person sending and the person receiving. Not sending it when in doubt is the safer choice.
