Engagement

Overview

Engagement is a general term for how users react to posts on social media. It includes actions such as likes, comments, retweets (reposts), shares, saves, and clicks. The engagement rate (the number of engagements as a share of a post's impressions) is used as one metric for measuring an account's influence and the quality of its content.

Calculating engagement rate and rough benchmarks

How engagement rate is calculated differs by platform. In general, it's calculated as (engagements / impressions) x 100. X (formerly Twitter) is said to use impressions as the denominator, while Instagram is said to use follower count.

Engagement rate tends to fall as follower count grows. One reason given is that a larger share of the followers are accounts that don't react. For that reason, there's a view that you should look at engagement rate alongside follower count. A practical way to use it is to check your own account's engagement rate in each platform's analytics tool (X Analytics, Instagram Insights) and track how it changes from post to post.

Why question boxes boost engagement

A question box is a tool used as a way to boost engagement on social media. Ordinary posts mainly get one-way reactions from followers (likes, comments), but with a question box, followers actively send questions and the owner answers them, which creates two-way communication.

This two-way exchange gives followers a "sense of taking part." The experience of having your own question answered is thought to be more likely to create a strong psychological connection than simply pressing like. Sharing an answered Q&A can itself become a post that generates engagement, and it can start a positive cycle that draws in new questions.
