Picking an anonymous question box: account, review, data, fees, alerts

Updated: 2026-10-14 · 1 min read

How to read this article

Anonymous question boxes may look alike, but how you create one and how questions are handled before they arrive differ from service to service. This article lists the points to check when choosing one, and describes how Q drop works for each point. A comparison that lines up what other services officially state is in the related article "Anonymous question box services compared."

Accounts you need to create one

What to check is which accounts are needed by the person creating the box and by the person sending questions. For services that require linking a social media account, also look at the permissions you hand over through the link (read / post).

With Q drop, the person creating the box signs up with just an email address. You log in with a one-time link sent by email, and there are no passwords and no social media linking. People sending questions can send them without signing up.

How review works and when it happens

What to check is the order: whether questions are reviewed before they reach the inbox, or hidden after they arrive. With the method that hides them after they arrive, they show up in the inbox at least once. Also check whether you can look at questions that were filtered out by review later.

With Q drop, questions are reviewed automatically before they enter the inbox, and questions judged inappropriate, as well as questions that couldn't be judged, are moved to "Held." Held questions stay without being deleted, and the owner can move them back to the inbox. The owner can decide in the dashboard whether questions marked "caution" go to the inbox or to Held, and which words send a question to Held (Muted words).

How sender information is handled

What to check is which information about the sender can be seen, and by whom. Anonymous means your name isn't shown. What the service records is written in its privacy policy.

With Q drop, the sender's name and account are not shown to the owner. As a measure against pranks, the sender's IP address is stored in encrypted form and shown to the owner. The record of the questions you've sent (My question log) is stored only on the sender's own device.

What's paid

What to check is which features cost money, and whether paid features require signing up for an account.

Q drop is free, including creating a question box, sending questions, answering, and notifications.

Whether there are notifications

What to check is whether there's a way to let the owner know about new questions and a way to let the sender know about answers, and what the notifications include.

With Q drop, the owner can get notified of new questions by email. There are no notifications for the sender. The sender can check whether an answer has been posted in "My question log."

The Q drop details in this article are as of October 14, 2026.
